A IIIT university established by the Government of Chhattisgarh in public-private-partnership with India’s leading power producer National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), IIIT-NR is situated in India’s most ambitious Greenfield city, Naya Raipur. IIIT-NR aims to emerge as India’s prime incubator for innovation and research, and to foster technical talent of global standards.
The core idea behind the IIIT-NR is to build a globally competitive institution to attract the best faculty and student community from around the world through its innovative, cutting-edge and market-driven curriculum coupled with a clear focus on entrepreneurship. The Government of Chhattisgarh has given the university an autonomous framework to enable it to draw upon the lessons and good practices from leading institutions, experts and academicians, in India and globally, to create a university of the future, at par with the best in the world.
To begin with, IIIT-NR will offer four-year graduate programmes in Computer Science and Engineering and in Electronics and Communication Engineering. The core curriculum will focus on encouraging skill-building, innovation and entrepreneurship among students, and offering an ecosystem for the same. Research in IIIT-NR will have an applied/translational focus, addressing a critical gap in India. IIIT-NR will network with leading educational institutions in and around Naya Raipur and also forge partnerships with leading knowledge institutions in India and abroad to drive research and innovation. It will also create strong links with industry to strengthen applied research as well as hands-on learning to enable translation of technology to markets.
IIIT-NR recognises that invention and innovation is increasingly taking place at the intersection of the humanities and the sciences. IT leaders are already hiring professionals from across disciplines such as sociology, linguistics, data science etc. to cater to SMAC (Social Media, Mobility, Analytics and Cloud Computing) technology solutions for their clients. Therefore, it would create a multidisciplinary learning environment where a core curriculum in technology will be a part of a more holistic education that includes the humanities, design, management and soft skills. It would thus be well-positioned to create well-rounded knowledge professionals having an interdisciplinary outlook and ready to enter the global market, having the ability to create new value.
IIIT-NR will adopt innovative pedagogic approaches and tools. There will be emphasis on hands-on learning, supported by state-of-the-art labs. A blended and collaborative learning approach would leverage online learning tools and platforms. Rather then impose on them online learning on conventional legacy systems of teaching, IIIT-NR would offer online learning in modules embedded in the course design and pedagogy.
