UNNATI

A Project by the Students of NIT Raipur towards Women Empowerment

As per the Census of India, women comprise of 586.5 million of the total population of 1.21 billion in India. Although there has been a positive change in their status in the last few decades, the overall picture continues to be worrisome. For example, the sex ratio continues to be low and which stand at 940 females per 1000 males. This raises some important questions to be addressed, such as: what are the barriers that operate in bringing a drastic change to their socio-economic upliftment, increased awareness, higher education, professional avenues etc. As per the data given above, women comprise almost 50% of the country’s total population, however, they continue to fair poor when it comes to contributions being made in the economic and social development. This directly affects the status that they enjoy in the society, with majority of them feeling disempowered and less confident.

The government of India has taken up this matter seriously and a number of schemes have been introduced such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme; One Stop Centre Scheme; Women Helpline Scheme; UJJAWALA; Working Women Hostel etc. All these schemes focus on empowering women in the social, political, economic and legal spheres. The number of women who have benefitted from these schemes is large and there is every hope that in the near future the set targets would be achieved. However, our society continues to get marred by various socio-cultural inhibitions that do not let women to come out of their domestic sphere and challenge the discriminatory structures.

We, the students of NIT Raipur, therefore believe that the practices that exploit women and their rights can be annihilated only if the females themselves are made aware of the structures and institutions that discriminate against them and question their identities as individuals. For us, a woman is empowered when:

  • She is taking her own decisions and making choices on the basis of her own will
  • She has a complete control over her life -in her family as well as workplace
  • She is leading her life with self-worth, respect and dignity
  • She has equal status in the society
  • She has equal rights to participate in various societal activities
  • She has an equal opportunity to various economic activities

We, therefore, would like to introduce one project in collaboration with MARD : MEN AGAINST RAPE & DISCRIMINATION for making the women of the state gender sensitized and subsequently empowered. Following various developments at the international and the national level, the state of Chhattisgarh has already introduced schemes that are immensely beneficial for women empowerment such as the Swavlamaban Yojana, Mahila Samakhya etc. A number of female activists such as Phulbasin Bai, Shamshad Begum have also devoted their lives for the cause. We, therefore, would like to get ourselves associated with the concerned Ministry and the people in a unique manner, the details of which have been provided in a tabular format later.

Shaurya – NIT Raipur

NIT Raipur is a premier institute of India and is delivering the best of technical knowledge to its budding students. Apart from education the Institute lot of other activities that help in the overall development of its students. Shaurya is one such platform where students interested in sports are provided with best of equipment and coaching. The project on Women Empowerment shall be regulated by the team of Shaurya.

We believe that one of the key factors in making women confident about themselves is sports, physical and mental fitness. In order to achieve this, Shaurya has already focused on self-defense training (karate to be specific) for the female students at NIT Raipur. Team Shaurya, therefore, would like to take this measure a step further and showcase their abilities, potential, patience and power in different arenas through UNNATI.

Team Shaurya has been organising various online polls on facebook to create awareness among people about sensitive issues which need to be brought under the limelight and worked upon for betterment and upliftment of women.

With similar object, it also plans to organise fund-rasing promotional events before and after SAMAR 2017. SAMAR 2017 is irrefragably a festival not to miss.
